As a former cheerleader herself, Hubbard High School Cheer Coach Stephanie Barca understands athletes desire to keep their old
cheer uniforms, as a symbol of both personal achievement and team pride. With that, the Hubbard, Ohio, cheerleading coach resurrected a former fundraising idea that breathes new life into old uniforms.
Rather than throwing old
cheerleading uniforms in the trash, Coach Barca decided to convert these same old uniforms into decorative pillows, which provided her graduating athletes with a memento for their years of hard work and participation and an excellent source of fundraising income.Barca, who also works at J&J Dance Depot, enlisted the help of one student’s parent, Sharon Sikora, a sewing expert who helped her bring this unique fundraising idea to life.
Since then, the two have set up shop in Sikora’s basement, where they’ve assembled over 20 pillows to date.
“…Each pillow takes about two hours to assemble,” remarks Sikora. “[Constructing the pillows] takes a lot of patience.”
According to
Vindy.com
‚ a Youngstown, Ohio, online newspaper
‚ each pillow prominently displays the school colors and includes a team logo. The pillows, themselves, are constructed in three sizes, based on the size of the cheerleading uniform used.More recently, Coach Barca and Sikora have taken this
fundraising idea to the field, where boosters have had no problem getting fans and former cheerleaders to pay $25 a pop for the momentous mounds of feathers. Of the 20-some pillows Barca and Sikora have already assembled, 13 have been sold.According to the same article, the “uniform pillows” fundraiser has been so successful, Coach Barca decided to carry on the fundraising campaign into basketball season. Proceeds from pillow sales will be spent on new supplies for the team and have already paid for nine new uniforms.
It’s time for Round Three of Cheer Shoe Review! In case you missed the first two rounds, we started our review tour with several
Nike cheer shoes and, last week, we looked at Chasse cheer shoes. Today, it’s all about Kaepa, a shoe brand beloved by cheerleaders everywhere. The Kaepa shoe is perfect for the
cheerleading squad that is looking for style, comfort and affordability that really performs! The lightweight, flexible cheer shoe technology that Kaepa uses keeps cheerleaders comfortable so they can focus on the skill and performance of their footwork, not the fit of their cheer footwear. You can find these great Kaepa picks (at a great price, too!) at
Omni Cheer.Kaepa Stellarlyte
The Stellarlyte was made with
cheerleading competitions in mind. This lightweight (6 oz.) shoe is great for competition squads as it is for indoor use only, on blue mats or spring floors. Part of the reason the shoe is so light is because it is made with a synthetic leather mesh and webbing. Not only is it lightweight and flexible, it’s also breathable (no stinky shoes here!).The injected EVA sole provides advanced shock protection during stunting and tumbling while the finger groove and heel notch improves the control of stunts. While it was designed with a secure-fit system for better fit, comfort, and stability, Kaepa recommends trying a half size smaller if you want a snugger fit.
Kaepa Touch
The Touch was made with
flyers and tumblers in mind. The Touch technology makes the shoe very tactile, providing an instant connection between the base’s hands and the flyer’s feet. An elastic spring pad is layered in the heel, which does exactly what it sounds like – provides your feet with a portable spring floor! This makes it perfect for
stunters and tumblers. While lightweight, the shoe can be worn indoors or out. The arch support enhances flexibility while the textured toe absorbs shock from landing. For the flyer or tumbler who wants a stable platform for their stunts, the Touch is a great pick.
Do you wear or have you worn Kaepa cheer shoes? What do you love about them and what is your favorite style? Share your own review!Every year, Chasse releases dozens of new cheer items (

Color: PurpleIt’s that wonderful time of year: cheer gear shopping. In the next few months, cheerleading squads are heading off to camp, hitting up summer practice, and preparing for the fall season on the sidelines of football games. In the midst of several new companies releasing new apparel, shoes, and accessories (
like Chasse), one of our favorite brands,
Soffe, is making major news with the release of its first ever uniform collection. That’s right! Soffe is now offering cheerleading uniforms. The collection includes two very different styles. Both looks include a skirt, shell top, and cropped bodyliner. The shell tops and skirts are double knit, while the bodyliners are a performance stretch moisture-management fabric.
Check out the two looks:
Look 1
This look is the Fury top, the Burst bodyliner, and the Storm skirt. This uniform features taping and is available in metallic and non-metallic color combinations. We love all the lines on this one and think it’s a great option for the sidelines. It’s a classic look but still unique and stylish.Look 2
This look is the Olympia top, the Neptune bodyliner, and the Cascade skirt. This uniform features clean, modern lines. We love how smooth this style is!These Soffe uniforms are available exclusively at cheer retailers
Omni Cheer and
Campus Teamwear. Prices start at $33.95. We expect to see some squads wearing these next season and we can’t wait to see how they look in action.

Book: The Notebook
Actress: Rachel McAdamsRunning a coed cheerleading squad presents a new set of obstacles for team leaders to overcome. With a little planning, though, it shouldn’t be hard to analyze your cheerleading team’s needs and put together a detailed product list that will make
ordering uniforms and gear for your cheer squad a breeze!Tips for Ordering Coed Uniforms
Order all of your uniforms from the same company. “Red’ is not a universal color when it comes to fabrics, and
custom logo designs need to be done in the same style too.Instead of the common
cheerleading skirt, men need to have either pants or shorts – depending on the climate and the skill level of the team. Shorts might be more comfortable for advanced levels, and allow for more flexibility and movement.Instead of the typical shell top, short sleeve shirts are standard for male cheerleaders. You may also want to get them a polo shirt and a sweater. The sweater would serve as the equivalent to the female’s
long sleeve body basic tops.A good material option for male uniforms is a poly/cotton blend, since it will be easy to get both the male and female uniforms in this fabric. If you order different fabrics for male and female cheerleading uniforms, the colors and overall look won’t match.
Shoes for male cheerleaders are very different than
shoes for female cheerleaders. Most often it is female cheerleaders that are flyers, which means their shoes have to be light, flexible and offer grips. Male cheerleaders are usually bases, spotters and tumblers, so their shoes need to offer support. It’s a good idea to go with the same brand of shoes, so that even though they won’t be an exact match, the male and female members of your team will still have a similar style of shoe.Tips for Ordering Coed Gear
A coed team may be doing more, and more difficult,
stunting and power tumbling, so you’ll need different training tools than you would for an all-female squad. Have the females
practice with a Stunt Stand, adjusted so that they can practice with a larger platform, which will be similar to a male’s hand.A main skill for most coed teams is power tumbling, so you’ll need to have plenty of mats and a spring floor for practice. Other good equipment are tumble tracks and trampolines.
A coed cheer team’s fitness needs are also going to be very different, so make sure that you get the right gear for male conditioning, like larger dumbbells.
Cheerleading competition season is here. You’ve practiced your routine so many times, you’re doing it in your sleep. You’ve ran miles, stretched for hours, and have done so many repetitions you’ve lost count. You are physically and mentally ready to take on your competitors and come out on top this season. You’ve got the physical conditioning and an impressive routine that you know you’ll score high on, but what about your actual appearance? Crazy as it may be, judges actually have a place on the score sheet for this section. They judge on facial expressions. It’s such an easy away to gain points but coaches often forget about this section on the score card.
Even if your team is smiling and making expressions during the routing, the judges are sitting a far distance from the mat and the bright overhead lights will easily wash out those smiles. It’s important to apply heavy make up, strategically placed to help those big smiles shine through all of the distractions. Layer on eye makeup and mascara to play up your eyes, use heavy powder to combat shine, generously apply blush to give you face some contour, and lipsticks in dark pink or red to play up big smiles and make your teeth look whiter.
We’ve also found some useful websites that give you a step by step tutorial on how to create make up looks that really stand out. Please remember to check competition guidelines as well as some competitions don’t allow rhinestones.
Glitterbug Cosmetics
They offer some great step by step make up tutorials for cheerleaders and dancers. They also have a great price point range if your team is on a budget.Urban Decay Cosmetics
Even though they are more expensive, they offer some out-of-the-box tutorials and they’re products can be bought in department stores and
Sephora.MAC Cosmetics
A much higher price point, but a lot of their looks can be translated into makeup ideas for teams. They are always rotating tutorials through their website as well, so there is a lot to choose from.Another great place to find
make up tutorials is YouTube. YouTube has a large source of user made videos that take you through the step by step process of applying make up. Though the products they use are often not linked, you can draw a lot of inspiration from these creative makeup artists. We hope this was resourceful and best of luck in this competition season!
